To take the box apart, you need to unplug the power cord and remove all the screws at the bottom. As a warning, even if you try to clean the box regularly, there's a good chance the screws have corroded due to occasional cat urine exposure. By: Administrator

A view of one side - like I said, no matter how often you regularly clean the outside, almost certainly you'll find unpleasantness inside. Since you've got it open, might as well clean it! By: Administrator

One of the leadscrews and rake mechanisms. Also note the limit microswitch (little black switch with green wires) that indicates the rake is correctly parked. Again, even though I clean the outside of the box weekly, upon opening I found all sorts of crusty corners that needed to be cleaned out. By: Administrator

The control board sits right below the switch on the back wall of the ScoopFree. The proc is an Atmel ATTiny AVR micro. No idea what J2 and JP1 do - someday I'll go back and try to figure that out. By: Administrator

On the opposite side from the control board is the drive motor, connected to a worm gear which turns a regular gear attached to one of the leadscrews. That same gear also has a cogged pulley for driving the belt over to the other side's leadscrew. The item below the motor is a belt tensioner. By: Administrator

One of the optical boards is mounted on each side, just above the leadscrews. I found mine had suffered the somewhat humiliating fate of being peed upon by a passing feline. That's why they were no longer working - they needed cleaning! By: Administrator

Cleaning them is as simple as taking out the screw and washing the optical surface with a water-soaked paper towel. Here's the receiver after cleaning - you can still see some corrosion from its earlier fate around the screw hole. By: Administrator
